Home services companies in Florida

Remodeling, flooring and turf sit largely outside Florida's certified-trade licensing system, which makes them harder to research than roofing or impact windows. Here is how we check them, and the companies with a current SunVetted profile.

This category covers the trades that do not fit neatly under impact windows or roofing: kitchen and bath remodeling, flooring and epoxy coatings, and artificial turf. It is also where Florida's licensing system gets confusing for homeowners. A structural remodel requires a licensed building contractor and a permit. Turf and decorative coatings generally do not require a state license at all, which is normal for those trades rather than a warning sign. That shifts the burden of proof onto insurance, written scope, and work you can go look at. Each profile below states exactly which checks apply and which we could and could not verify.

How we check

What we verify for home services companies.

Licensing, where it applies

Remodels that move walls or utilities need a licensed contractor. Coatings and turf usually do not carry a state license, and we say so plainly.

Insurance & registration

Where no state license exists, general liability insurance, workers compensation and county registration become the meaningful checks.

Independent reviews

We report ratings only where we can trace them to a real platform, and we say when we cannot.

Documented work

Portfolios, showrooms and verifiable local references carry more weight in trades with small review bases.

Common questions

What Florida homeowners ask.

Do home services contractors need a license in Florida?

It depends on the trade. Remodeling that moves walls, plumbing or electrical requires a licensed contractor such as a Certified Building Contractor (CBC). Epoxy coating and artificial turf generally do not require a state license. Where no license exists, insurance and references matter more.

Why do some companies here show no rating?

Because we only publish a rating we can trace to a named independent platform. Smaller specialty trades often have thin review histories, and some directory sites publish automatically generated star ratings that we will not cite. When we cannot verify a rating, we say so and lead with what is verifiable instead.

How do I check a contractor's insurance?

Ask for a certificate of insurance (COI) showing general liability and, if they have employees, workers compensation. Ask that it be sent directly from their insurance agent, which confirms the policy is active rather than expired.

What matters most when there is no license to check?

A written scope of work, proof of current insurance, addresses of comparable completed jobs you can look at, and a clear warranty. For any trade, get materials, prep method and materials and layers in writing rather than agreeing to a verbal description.

Should I be worried if a company has no BBB profile?

Not necessarily. BBB accreditation is a paid membership, and plenty of legitimate small contractors never enroll. It is a positive signal when present, not a red flag when absent. Weigh it alongside licensing, insurance and verifiable work history.
